SIBO Breath Test

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition that results in excessive bloating and gas, especially after meals, as well as other IBS symptoms. The SIBO breath test can detect the gases that are produced by the bacteria. Treatment often involves eliminating the overgrowth with antibiotics, herbal supplements, and/or a specialized diet.

SIBO Profiles are non-invasive breath tests which capture exhaled hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) gases following patient ingestion of a Lactulose Rx solution to evaluate small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO).

Patients have the option of a 2 or 3-hour SIBO assessment. The 3-hour SIBO profile provides insight into gas levels over a longer time frame and is recommended for patients with slower gastrointestinal transit or constipation. Additionally, a flatline result in the third hour could indicate the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas. As standard practice, we always suggest the 3-hour test but both are available.

Testing instructions: You will be given a set of the specific instructions to follow for collecting the breath test sample when you receive the test kit. While there are no rigid rules on time frames for discontinuing supplements to establish a baseline, we suggest you discontinue any non-medically necessary medications or supplements 4 days prior to testing to get a good baseline.
